My life story, continually evolving, looks so different than what I thought it would be. At this point, I’m not even sure WHAT I thought it would be. However, I know I wouldn’t have predicted this: that I’d be back in Cleveland, also living in Boston, remarried to my friend I met when I was 10, an author, living in a suburb of Boston. NO. WAY. In my high school yearbook, we had predictions for the year 2010, and mine was that I’d be on SNL, married to Tom Hanks. I was obsessed with early Tom Hanks–Bosom Buddies, Splash, and Big. I also thought I’d end up on SNL. In fact, when I was at Upright Citizens Brigade comedy theater in NYC, 15 years post-high school, I performed regularly with two performers who got on SNL, and many who are now on TV. I wasn’t so far from it, after all. But, I quit; the comedy life made me too anxious…
So, I moved to Cape Cod, got engaged 10 weeks later, married and had kids, a regular job, and that was that…
Fast forward 13 years, I’m divorced, there’s a pandemic, and I re-meet my now second husband, on Facebook, because of a blog post I wrote, “Single and Alone in a Pandemic.” He commented. The rest is history.
What I realize now, and every day, is that we can’t predict how things will turn out. Life is so insane! We can brace ourselves for the ride, hang tight, take chances, and make the best of it. I wouldn’t change my life now, but I had so many rough twists and turns, years where I was drowning, years where I was ecstatic. I saw this image today, so I wanted to share, because it resonated with me. I bet many of us can’t even believe how we got to where we are today, but we are grateful for the ride.
